Chapter 9

First thing the next morning, after checking into the clinic and telling Annette to call her if they got any patients, Kenzie drove to Jane’s house. She’d brought her laptop, because she fully intended on looking up all the info she could find, not only on Brett Denyon but his restaurant, Glacier Grill.

Jane appeared surprised to see her this early, but graciously led the way into the house. “Let me get the Wi-Fi password,” she said. “And you can link to my printer if you’d like, in case you need to print something.”

“That would be awesome.” Kenzie impulsively hugged her. “I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this. I’ve got someone coming to install Wi-Fi, but it’s going to take a bit. There are a few things I need to look up before then.”

“I understand.” Smiling, Jane patted her shoulder. “You doctors always need to stay up to date with the latest medical developments.”

Kenzie didn’t have the heart to tell the other woman that this wasn’t medically related. Instead, she waited while Jane went into the other room, returning with a yellow sticky note. “Here you go,” Jane said, handing it over. “It’s called Mayor Link.”

“Thank you again.” Kenzie sat down in one of the overstuffed armchairs and opened her laptop. “I won’t be long. I have to get back to the clinic. So please don’t pay any attention to me.”

“The printer is right there.” Jane pointed. “It’s a state-of-the-art color laser printer. I just filled it up with paper, so you should be good to go. It’s called Mayor Printer.”

“I see a pattern here.”

Her comment made Jane laugh. “We’re not all that original, that’s for sure. But having similar names for everything makes it easy to remember.”

Busy logging on, Kenzie glanced up, smiled and got right back to it, barely noticing when Jane left the room.

Not surprisingly, she found numerous news stories on the restaurant shooting. There were also quite a few on Brett himself, along with photos. In some of these, Brett was accompanied by women, a different one each time. They each had one thing in common. Whether blonde or brunette, each woman was beautiful enough to be a model. While each gazed adoringly up at Brett, he appeared indifferent, staring straight at the camera with a half smile on his handsome face.

Out of my league, Kenzie thought, grimacing at herself. The down-to-earth Brett she’d come to know seemed nothing like the sophisticated, suave man in the photos.

Since she didn’t have a lot of time to sit and read, she printed everything, immediately shoving each piece of paper into a manila folder so Jane wouldn’t see it. She’d go over all of it later once she was back at the clinic, and again with Brett when she got home.

Luckily, Jane’s printer was fast. Kenzie got everything printed in under twenty minutes. She logged out, closed her laptop and went in search of Jane to thank her.

She found Jane in the kitchen, talking on an old-fashioned wall phone.
